My name is Ali, I grew up in Ross, graduated from Bowling Green (ohio, not kentucky), absolutely love chocolate, enjoy playing tennis, and I have a strong love for dogs. It started early... at about 6 years old, just as any normal child who just wants a family dog, but it took me about 8 years to convince my parents that they wanted one as well. I used to clip out newspaper ads of dogs for sale and leave them on my parent's pillows, just as a little reminder in case they changed their minds. I would beg and beg and beg... until one day my family threw me a surprise party, saving the best present for last: A card telling me that I was getting a dog....finally! I went to the Humane Society and picked out our first family dog, Holly, a beautiful mutt. She sadly passed away my senior year in college, it took a long time to get over losing her, but I missed having a dog around so much!
Now age 24, I have my very own pup, Zumaya. He is a black lab, and just about 1 year old. I adopted him from the Humane Society up in Trenton Ohio. He has adjusted so easily into my life, and I couldn't imagine not having him around.

Dog Park of The Month Otto Armleder Memorial Park 5000 Wooster Pike Cincinnati, OH 45226
There is a great canopy for shade when you first walk in. It covers an open cement slab with benches that is fenced in until you are ready to let your dog run into either the small dog or large dog area.
Also there is plenty of drinking water to go around. There is a water fountain with a drinking bowl attached to the side. Just be careful during the really cold months of winter they have to turn off the water in case of freezing. Then you just have to bring your own.
Do you have a favorite dog park that you visit, and would like to share? Email me and it could be the featured Dog Park of The Month!
Great News! All $11,000 has been raised for Andrew to get his service dog. Up until 6/30/08, $3,000 had been raised, until an anonymous donor donated $8,000! Now they just need help raising travel money, money for a 10 night stay in a hotel in Xenia where they are picking up their dog, donations for 2 kennels, pet supplies and food.
If you would be interested in donating for any of the above items, please send an email to 4pawsforandrew@gmail.com
My name is Andrew Smith, and I'm almost your typical
nine-year-old-boy. My life revolves around football and baseball, and I
tend to get stuck on one thing for months at a time. I love the Bengals
and the Reds: I am, after all, from Cincinnati! I play on a football
team and a baseball team, but it's hard for me when I miss the ball or
the tackle, I just can't seem to deal with it. I've been mean to the
coaches even, but they usually cut me a break. I get upset when my
school work doesn't show 100% perfect and even more upset when my mom
asks me to stop playing and do something, even come and eat!
Wardens had ordered 39 dogs checked for flea and fly bites. They also
issued citations for extreme heat, insufficient bedding and floors
dogs' feet could fall through.
Apparently in Pennsylvania it is legal for an owner to put their dog down by shooting it. There is no reason for the owner of these dogs to do this. If you can't take care of the animals you have either give them up or recognize the consequences that you may face if your miscare is discovered. There is no reason for animals to live like this...they have no choice, but the owner sure does. If you didn't want these animals anymore, then give them up. Simple as that.

Side Note: Yesterday I was leaving the grocery store and putting everything in my trunk when I noticed that my "Please Spay and Neuter Ribbon" was missing from my car. I could only hope that the "wind" blew the magnet off, but I have a feeling I am mistaken.
Has anything like that every been stolen off of your car?
Goodbye Leland
Monday 08-04-2008 1:23pm ET
Leland you are going to be missed! I've really enjoyed working with you and find you truly inspiring.
One of the many tasks on Leland's weekly To Do list for Animal Friends Humane Society was his weekly visits to Clear Channel, bringing along one of the shelters dogs or cats and talking about them on air. I video tape the interview and the interaction of the animal while visiting here. This video is posted on the website in hopes of getting people into Animal Friends to adopt.
Leland has a strong passion for saving animals, and in order to cover everything that he accomplished during his 4 years with Animal Friends I found an article that comes from the July 25th issue of the Hamilton Journal News, from a letter from Mildred Roberts of Middletown. I think this will help give you an understanding of how important Leland Gordan is to Animal Friends.
"This letter is to honor Leland Gordon for the many sacrifices and
contributions he made to our community and to our animal friends as the
executive director of Animal Friends Humane Society. It was with great
sadness that I heard he is moving to Canada and will no longer be with
us. What a huge loss his departure will be. To say he will be missed is
an understatement. Filling Leland's shoes will be a daunting task.
Leland served under the most adverse and depressing of circumstances
and tirelessly met the challenges head-on. His unparalleled commitment
and concern have brought innovative and radically positive change
during his time here. Leland achieved in four years what others
couldn't in a lifetime. His passion, zeal and convictions not only
greatly increased public awareness and conscience for the plight of
animals, but he also created numerous programs and alliances which
connected our community directly with the animals in need of adoption,
such as the Pet Mobile, animals featured on public access cable and
much more. He also sensitized our community to adopt pets from the
shelters to save an animal's life, rather than patronizing pet shops
that perpetuate inhumane puppy mills.
Leland's zeal and vision was such that he touched everyone he came
in contact with to not only care but actually do something about
neglected and abused animals. Leland mobilized the masses for their
cause, so much so that a new and much-needed animal shelter is now
being built due to his ability not just to articulate but inspire
change. He was able to get others to catch the vision and, thankfully,
we have caring voters, grass-roots organizers and community leaders in
place who were listening. The new shelter will be a reality soon ...
I humbly ask the leaders in Butler County who may be reading this to
name the largest wing — if not the entire facility — after Leland
Gordon, as a token of our appreciation for his tireless efforts and
service to those with no voice — our animal friends."

5 tips to Keep Your Dog Safe in the Heat of the Summer
Wednesday 07-30-2008 3:17pm ET
The hottest days of the summer are here...The weather this weekend shows highs in the low to mid 90's. Here are some tips for keeping your dog safe in the heat of the summer.
1. Always make sure your dog has plenty of fresh clean water at ALL times.
2. Never EVER leave your dog in the car.
3. Exercise early in the morning or late in the evening when it is less humid and the temperature is cooler.
4. If your dog is outside, check on him or her frequently; make sure they have fresh clean water and SHADE.
5. Make sure you have an emergency
water ramp near any body of water that your dog might be exposed to.
Drowning is a problem that is more common in the summer when dogs are
exposed to pools, lakes and rivers. If you have a boat, a lake, or
pool, make sure you have a ramp.

Planet's Puppy Bowl has been counter-programming to the Super Bowl for
the past few years. Now to counter the Summer Olympics, Animal Planet plans to
introduce Puppy Games 2008. With more than 30 puppies representing a
multitude of nations all within one Animal Planet Stadium, each will compete for
the Gold in a variety of events including swimming, boxing, soccer and even
gymnastics.
The three hour special begins on 08-08-08 at 6pm ET, with a sightly
shorter version of the games airing on the same night as the Olympics closing
ceremony, August 23rd, from 8-11p.
